Very nice. I think you should have some more contrast behind him though. It looks like there is a strong light source in front of him. So it would be darker behind him and there would be more dramatic lights and darks on his face.
I do like the softness of it though.

why don't you watch the movie? Then you would find out how Gandalf looks like in them, and then you could imagine a pose, and use photos as references, to make sure you remember how nose, eyes looks like etc..

Because I was hired to draw THIS picture. If I was to do fan art then I would do as you say and just watch the films. I would also do several studies from photos to learn the features.

so, you like lord of the rings, huh? ; ) well, this one is amazing. i could never get those details!
